    Dr. Bertie Daly

    Dr Bertie Daly is originally from Kerry. He attended secondary school in Waterford before undertaking medical training at University, Cork, graduating in 1983, in the same class as Dr Zelie Gaffney.

    Bertie did postgraduate speciality training for General Practice in the Cork Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice. On completing his training, he worked in General Practice in Mallow, Co Cork, before being appointed to a post in Newmarket, Co Cork. Bertie and Zelie established practice in August 1989.

    Bertie has been involved in GP training since 1991, initially as a trainer of GPs for the Cork Vocational Training Scheme, before establishing the Southwest GP training Programme, with Dr John Casey, in 2009. 

    Since 2001, Bertie has been advocating for the Primary care strategy, and for the primacy of the Primary Care multi – disciplinary team. The practice was delighted to move to the Duhallow Primary Care Complex in 2020.

    Bertie maintains continuous professional development through postgraduate courses in paediatrics, musculoskeletal medicine, Palliative Care, and cardiology. He is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners and a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He has a Master of Medical Education degree from NUIG. Bertie also has a Diploma in Dermatology.

    Bertie continues an ongoing commitment to the long-established tradition of attending an outlying surgery in Rockchapel on Monday afternoons (excluding Bank Holidays).

    Outside of work, he enjoys cycling, hill walking and family time.

    Dr. Zelie Gaffney Daly

    Dr Zelie Gaffney Daly is from Cork County. Zelie graduated from UCC in 1983 and commenced General Practice in 1989 with her husband Bertie. 

    She has a lifelong interest in the practice of medicine and in ongoing medical education.

    Dr Zelie holds a Diploma in Paediatrics/ Diploma in Obstetrics/ Diploma in Women’s Health/ Master’s in Women’s Health/ Diploma in Dermatology and is a Member of the Irish College of General Practice. She is a Tutor in Contraception. She is a LARC Tutor and a member of the British Menopause Society.

    Dr Zelie is an advocate for furthering the Medical Education of Undergraduate Students at University College Cork, where she lectures undergraduate medical students and is an examiner in the Final Year Programme in Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 

    Together with colleagues in Duhallow, she founded the Duhallow Academy, whereby medical students from UCC are placed in several practices in Duhallow to complete a module in General Practice in their final year programme.

    She has recently graduated from her Alma Mater, UCC, with a Diploma in European Art History.

    Dr Zelie was honoured to be recently awarded the Windle Prize on behalf of the School of Medicine, UCC. The Windle Prize is awarded annually to an individual selected by the Executive of the school in recognition of contributions to assist the school in undertaking and fulfilling its functions. Dr Zelie received this award as recognition of her work providing clinical education in primary care settings as part of Duhallow Academy. Duhallow Academy comprises many practices in the Duhallow area that contribute to medical education by providing mentoring to final year medical students from UCC.

    In Easter 2024, Zelie took up the role of Lead Doctor for the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and joined the board of trustees. The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is an all-Ireland group. The role of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, a voluntary organisation which has been in existence for over 40 years, is to bring people with additional needs on pilgrimage holidays to Lourdes and on holiday in Ireland, and we fundraise to cover their costs. Our annual Lourdes Pilgrimage involves up to 40 groups of Carers and Guests travelling to Lourdes on Easter Sunday and returning on the following Saturday.

    Zelie enjoys the freedom of residing in the countryside. Dr Zelie’s motto is ‘Mol an Óige agus tiocfaidh said’.

    Dr. Elena Hennessy

    Dr Elena Hennessy graduated from the Russian State Medical University in 2006 and completed specialist training at the Endocrinology Research Centre in Moscow from 2006 to 2012. During this time, she earned a PhD for her research on Coeliac Disease and Gastric Emptying in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes.

    Her work has been presented at major international conferences, including the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), and the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED).

    Dr. Hennessy was awarded the ESPE Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Endocrinology in Glasgow in 2010 and also received a fellowship from ISPAD to gain further specialist training in children’s diabetes in Los Angeles in 2012.

    Since moving to Ireland in 2015, Dr Hennessy has worked in diverse clinical settings, including paediatrics and psychiatry at Cork University Hospital (CUH), as well as child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) at St. Stephen’s Hospital.

    Before beginning her clinical practice in Ireland, she completed the PRES 1 and PRES 2 exams to obtain registration with the Irish Medical Council. Dr Hennessy’s commitment to improving care for children with type 1 diabetes was recognised with the Professor Denis O’Sullivan Fellowship awarded by University College Cork (UCC), supporting her research into psychosocial issues affecting young people with this condition. This research also earned her a Doctorate in Medicine.

    As part of her training with the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), she completed clinical rotations across a broad range of specialities at University Hospital Kerry, including paediatrics, general medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, emergency medicine, and obstetrics & gynaecology. Hennessy is currently practising as a GP here at Ath Trasna, where she provides holistic, patient-centred care to individuals and families. She is also pursuing a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to enhance her ability to support women’s health.
