Ultrasound-Guided  Injections at Athy Medical

Dr Rowan offers ultrasound-guided injection therapy for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, foot, and ankle problems, as well as tendon, ligament, and arthritis conditions.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include steroid injections, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), or hyaluronic acid (gel) injections, all delivered under real-time ultrasound guidance for accuracy. He works closely with a local physiotherapist to ensure injections are combined with the right rehabilitation plan, and takes an honest, evidence-based approach — explaining clearly what the research does and doesn't support for your specific condition, so you can make an informed decision together.
Dr Rowan has trained extensively to bring this specialist service to patients locally, holding a Postgraduate Diploma in MSK Medicine from the Irish College of GPs, advanced training in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal injections with the Sports Medicine Ultrasound Group (SMUG) in the UK, and further training in PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy with Arthrex Medical in Munich, Germany.
His experience spans treating patients from recreational athletes to elite competitors, and as a multiple long-distance triathlon finisher himself — including full Ironman distance and Ironman Lanzarote, one of the toughest courses on the circuit — he brings a first-hand understanding of sports injuries and what it takes to get back to training and competing.
He is always glad to share what this training can offer, while recognising that good care comes as much from listening carefully to each patient as from any qualification. If you think you may benefit from this service, please speak to your GP or physiotherapist about a referral, or contact the practice directly to discuss your options
