What is an Autism Assessment?

Autism is a natural neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person communicates, relates to others, processes information, and experiences the world.

An autism assessment is a structured, respectful process designed to explore whether a child meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Equally importantly, it aims to build a full understanding of your child’s individual profile, including their strengths, preferences, and support needs.

Whatever the outcome, families receive clear feedback, practical recommendations, and guidance to support their child at home, in school, and in everyday life.

Who Is This Autism Assessment suitable for?

This service is suitable for:

✔ Children and adolescents aged 6–17

✔ Families seeking understanding and clarity around autism‑related differences

✔ Parents needing formal reports for schools, SENOs, or services

✔ Families looking for clear next steps and guidance

Who should attend the Child's Autism Assessment?

In addition to meeting with your child or adolescent, it will be important for the assessing clinician to meet with the primary caregivers in the child’s life. In addition to the parents, this may also include other family members who have regular interaction with the child. We ask that for the initial meeting, the total number of participants attending is limited to 2 people.

How do Children's ASD Assessments work?

Step 1: Pre-Assessment Questionnaires (Online)

Before the first appointment, a set of online questionnaires will be sent by email. These provide an opportunity to reflect on experiences in a relaxed, flexible way and help ensure the assessment sessions focus on what is most relevant to the child’s individual profile, strengths, and needs.

Step 2: Initial Parent Consultation (Online  60-90 mins)

A collaborative clinical interview with parents to explore y our child’s development, including:

  • Communication, behaviour and social experiences

  • Strengths, interests, and challenges at home and school

  • Any areas of concern or questions you may have

This session helps us to build a comprehensive understanding of your child. Where appropriate, your adolescent may join part of this session if they feel comfortable, to ensure their perspective is included.

Step 3: Diagnostic Interview with Parents (Online – 2 hours)

A more in-depth diagnostic interview with parents focusing on early development, communication, behaviour patterns, and overall developmental history.

Step 4: Child/Adolescent Assessment (In‑Person – 1 hour)

A structured, activity and conversation based session designed to understand how your child communicates, interacts, and experiences social situations in a supportive environment.

This session must take place in person to ensure a full and accurate assessment.

Step 5: Feedback & Report Review (Online – 60 minutes)

A dedicated feedback session with parents where your psychologist will:

  • Explains findings in a clear and sensitive way

  • Answers any questions you may have

  • Provide personalised recommendations and next steps.

What will I get from this assessment?

Should your child meet the criteria for ASD, your child will be offered fast-tracked access to psychological support in Centric Mental Health. If there are specific concerns around the child’s presentation you would like to highlight prior to your assessment, you will have the opportunity to do so both during the Pre-Assessment Questionnaire and in the initial meeting with your assessing psychologist.
