Bereavement and Loss at Navan Road Medical
When someone close to us dies, it is an understandably difficult and upsetting time that can affect all aspects of our daily lives. Bereavement Counselling helps us to process grief and adjust to life without our loved one.
This service is delivered by Centric Mental Health, a psychologist‑led mental health division within the Centric Health network, supporting patients across Ireland.
What is Bereavement?
Bereavement refers to the experience of losing someone significant in your life. Grief is the natural emotional, psychological and physical response to that loss.
Grief is deeply personal. Some people feel intense emotions immediately, while others notice difficulties emerging later. For some, grief softens with time; for others, it may come and go or feel persistently overwhelming. All of these experiences are valid.
Bereavement can affect areas such as:
- Concentration and memory
- Motivation and energy
- Sleep and appetite
- Emotional regulation
- Relationships and social connection
- Work or academic performance
What are the Common Symptoms of Bereavement?
People who are bereaved may experience one or many of the following:
- Shock or disbelief
- Feeling emotionally numb or detached
- Deep sadness or longing
- Guilt or regret
- Anger, frustration or irritability
- Fear or anxiety about the future
- Fatigue or low energy
- Insomnia or disturbed sleep
- Changes in appetite or weight
These experiences can fluctuate over time and may feel confusing or exhausting.
When Might It Help to Seek Support?
You may consider Bereavement and Loss Counselling if your grief is affecting your ability to live day‑to‑day in a way that feels healthy or sustainable.
Support can be helpful if:
- The pain of grief feels as strong months or years after the loss
- You feel stuck, numb, or unable to move forward
- Sleep, work, or relationships are significantly impacted
- You feel isolated or unsupported
- The loss has triggered earlier bereavements or past trauma
It is never too soon or too late to seek support. Talking to a professional does not mean there is something “wrong” with how you are grieving - it simply means you don’t have to go through it alone.
How can Bereavement Therapy can help me?
Bereavement therapy provides a safe, neutral space to explore your feelings, memories and challenges following a loss.
While friends and family are often an important source of support, they may be grieving too or may struggle to know how to help. A trained clinician can offer consistent, focused support that is centred solely on your needs.
Bereavement counselling may help you to:
- Make sense of complex or conflicting emotions
- Process the impact of the loss in your own time
- Reduce feelings of isolation
- Develop coping strategies for daily life
- Adjust to life after loss while staying connected to what matters
Our clinicians recognise that every bereavement is unique. Therapy is tailored to your individual circumstances, your relationship with the person who died, and your personal history.
