What is an Autism Assessment?

An Autism Assessment is a structured process that helps build a deeper understanding of a person’s strengths, communication style, sensory experiences, and support needs. It also explores whether an individual meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  

Autism is a natural neurodevelopmental difference and part of human diversity. It can influence how people experience communication, relationships, information processing, routines, and the world around them. 

For many adults, gaining clarity later in life can be validating, helping to make sense of lifelong patterns and experiences. 

Whether or not a diagnosis is made, the assessment provides meaningful insight, personalised guidance, and a clearer path forward. 

Who Is The Adult Autism Assessment For?

This service is suitable for adults aged 18+ who: 

✔ Are exploring whether they may be autistic 
✔ Have long-standing questions about social, emotional, or sensory differences 
✔ Want clarity after years of masking or feeling “different” 
✔ Are seeking formal documentation for education, workplace, or supports 

Who Is Involved in the Assessment?

The focus of the assessment is primarily on your lived experience. 

We also ask for input from an informant, someone who knows you well and can provide insight into your early development and history. 

This may include: 
• A parent 
• A partner 
• A family member 

We understand that not everyone feels comfortable including someone else in the process. If this applies to you, this can be discussed with your psychologist in advance, and alternative approaches can be considered together.

How does an Adult Autism Assessment work?

All assessments are led by Chartered Psychologists and follow best-practice clinical standards. The process is structured, supportive, and designed to allow you to share your experiences at a comfortable pace. 

Assessments take place across our Dublin and Galway clinics, with some components available online. 

Step 1: Pre‑Assessment Questionaries (Online) 

Before your first appointment, you will receive a set of online questionnaires by email. These allow you to reflect on your experiences in your own time and help ensure our sessions are focused on what matters most to you. 

Step 2: Initial Consultation (60-90 mins) In Person) 

This is a supportive, in-person conversation with you to explore what has brought you to seek an assessment. We will talk through your current experiences, strengths, and any areas of difficulty, and begin to build a shared understanding of your needs and goals for the assessment process. 

Step 3: Clinical Interview (3 hours – Online) 

A more in-depth interview with you and your informant (where available) focusing on:  

Step 4: In‑Person Assessment (1 hour) 

A structured, activity- and conversation-based session designed to explore communication style, interaction with others, and experiences of social situations in a supportive and respectful environment. 

This session takes place in person to ensure a comprehensive and accurate assessment. 

Step 5: Feedback Session (Online – 60 minutes) 

A dedicated one‑to‑one session where your psychologist will:

What you will receive:  

✔  A comprehensive psychological report suitable for DARE and RACE applications 

✔ A clear outcome regarding whether assessment findings are consistent with autism  

✔ Strengths-based formulation of your profile 

✔ Individualised recommendations for daily life, work, or study 

✔ Guidance on supports and next steps 

If you meet the criteria for autism, you can access a range of therapeutic supports through Centric Mental Health. 

If autism is not identified, you will still receive a meaningful formulation of your experiences, along with tailored guidance and support options. 

Third‑Level Education & DARE Supports 

Where relevant, reports are completed in line with requirements for the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) scheme, supporting access to third-level education accommodations. 

How much does the Adults Autism Assessment cost?

Do I need a Referral?

No. You do not need a GP or professional referral to book an Adult Autism Assessment with us. You can book directly yourself.

Is it Common to seek an Autism Assessment as an Adult? 

Yes. Many people seek assessment in adulthood after years of feeling different, receiving partial explanations, or experiencing differences that were never fully understood.

What if I don’t receive an Autism Diagnosis? 

The assessment still provides valuable insight into your experiences, along with tailored recommendations and support options. 

Will this Assessment Label me? 

The aim is understanding, not labelling. Any diagnostic discussion is handled carefully, with respect for your identity and lived experience. 

Can this Help with Work or Education Supports? 

Yes. Where appropriate, reports can support applications for accommodations in education or workplace settings.
