What is Bereavement?

It is never easy when someone close to us passes away, with strong, and sometimes complicated, emotions being a common experience during this process. Sometimes these strong feelings can affect us in several areas, such as concentration, motivation, social interaction and work performance to name but a few. When this happens, it can lead to an even greater level of emotional distress.

Grief is a unique process for each person and does not follow a set sequence or timetable and, as such, difficulties can either arise immediately or wax and wane over a prolonged period. For some the grief process may be relatively short-lived before establishing an adjustment to their new set of circumstances, while for others there may be ongoing struggles with this adjustment.

Symptoms of Bereavement

  • Shock and disbelief
  • Feeling emotionally numb
  • Sadness
  • Guilt
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Changes in appetite

How can Bereavement Therapy can help me?

Having a neutral space to talk about one’s feelings and experiences when bereaved can be of immense value. A person’s natural supports such as friends and family are very important during periods of bereavement and grief; however, these people are often impacted by the loss of a loved one. When this happens, sometimes our normal supports may not be available to support us in the same way they normally would.

Talking with one of our qualified clinicians if you are experiencing difficulties related to bereavement can therefore be a very helpful and healing experience. Our clinicians recognise that every bereavement involves unique people with a unique set of circumstances and so will provide an individually tailored approach to bereavement counselling. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one and are struggling with this please do not hesitate to get in touch. Our clinicians have years of experience and can explore any area in which you are having difficulties.
