Pre Exposure Prophylaxis(PREP) for HIV at Village Medical Centre
What is PrEP?
PrEP is a drug taken by HIV negative people to help prevent contracting HIV, effectively stopping the virus from taking hold in the body. There is excellent evidence for PrEP use in men who have sex with men (MSM). While not 100 percent protective, taking daily PrEP – and condom use to protect against other STIs, please! – very significantly reduces your chance of contracting HIV if you are in a same-sex relationship. It can also be used on an “on-demand” basis, but the effectiveness of this method depends on your lifestyle, and adherence to medication.
How safe will I be on PrEP?
Again, your PrEP is not 100 percent effective, so it is an international guideline that PrEP patients have screening tests every three months.
The risk of side-effects is low.
How expensive is PrEP?
PrEP is funded by the HSE if you meet the clinical eligibility criteria. It is readily prescribed at Village Medical Clondalkin, where Dr Michael Flynn is a passionate advocate for its use and welcomes patients who need PrEP.
