Understanding Menopause

Menopause is a natural biological stage that occurs when the ovaries stop releasing eggs and menstrual periods permanently cease. A woman is considered officially menopausal after 12 consecutive months without a period with no other medical cause.

The Three Stages of Menopause

1. Perimenopause
This transitional phase usually begins in a woman’s early to mid-40s. Hormone levels start to fluctuate, causing symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. This phase can last anywhere from 3 to 6 years.

2. Menopause
This stage is confirmed once a woman has gone 12 months without a period. The average age of menopause in Ireland is 51, though it can occur earlier or later.

3. Post-Menopause
This is the stage after menopause. While menstruation has stopped, symptoms can continue, and risks of health conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease increase, making ongoing care and monitoring important.

Common Menopausal Symptoms

Hormonal changes during menopause can affect nearly every system in the body. Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats

  • Sleep difficulties and fatigue

  • Anxiety, low mood, or irritability

  • Brain fog, memory lapses, and trouble concentrating

  • Irregular or heavy periods (during perimenopause)

  • Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse

  • Urinary tract infections or incontinence

  • Weight gain or changes in metabolism

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Heart palpitations

  • Low libido

  • Reduced bone density

Every woman’s experience is unique. Whether symptoms are mild or disruptive, we’re here to provide personalised, supportive care to help you feel your best.

What Is Complex Menopause?

For many, menopause is a manageable life transition. However, complex menopause describes more challenging cases where symptoms are severe, prolonged, or complicated by other medical or psychological factors.

Complex menopause may involve:

  • Early or premature menopause before age 40 or 45

  • Surgical menopause, such as after ovary removal

  • Menopause with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or autoimmune disease.

  • Severe hormonal imbalances or mental health challenges

  • Hormone-sensitive migraines

  • Limited or no response to standard menopause treatments

Women experiencing complex menopause often require specialist-led, multidisciplinary care. At Women’s Health Raheny, that’s exactly what we offer: expert, integrated support tailored to your individual needs.

What to Expect

Your Journey at Women’s Health Raheny

At Women’s Health Raheny, we believe that navigating menopause, particularly when it’s complete, should be clear, supportive and tailored to you. We’ve designed a simple two-step care pathway to guide you confidently through your journey.

STEP 1. Menopause Nurse Specialist Consultation

Your journey begins with a dedicated consultation with our Menopause Nurse Specialist. This visit will include:

  • A full health history review

  • A wellness check and discussion of your symptoms

  • Lifestyle guidance specific to your needs

  • Any blood tests or screening, if required

  • The start of a personalised care plan

This step is all about listening to your story, understanding your symptoms and laying the groundwork for the right support.

STEP 2. Menopause Specialist GP Consultation

Once your results are in, you’ll meet with Dr. Sinead Hussey

In this consultation, she will:

  • Review your test results and symptom profile

  • Discuss treatment options, including hormone and nonhormone therapies

  • Address any complex or overlapping health issues

  • Build your tailored treatment plan aligned with your personal health goals

This two-visit pathway ensures timely, accurate diagnosis and effective, patient-centred care.
