What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a common yet often underdiagnosed condition affecting 1 in 10 women. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus typically on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic lining. This misplaced tissue reacts to your menstrual cycle, leading to inflammation, pain, and sometimes the formation of scar tissue or adhesions.
Symptoms can vary dramatically from severe pelvic pain to more subtle digestive or fertility issues. Because of this variability, many women wait up to 7 to 10 years before receiving an accurate diagnosis.
At Women’s Health Raheny, we are committed to shortening that delay. Our team prioritises early recognition, timely diagnosis, and personalised treatment, offering holistic, GP-led care to support your well-being at every stage.
Symptoms of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a complex condition, and symptoms can vary widely from person to person. For some, it causes severe, life-altering pain, while for others, it may go undiagnosed until they face difficulty conceiving. It is important to note that the severity of symptoms does not always reflect the extent of the disease even mild cases can cause significant distress.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, our team at Women’s Health Raheny is here to help:
-
Painful periods
-
Chronic pelvic pain not relieved by usual treatments
-
Pain during or after sex
-
Heavy menstrual bleeding
-
Fertility problems or difficulty conceiving
-
Persistent fatigue and bloating
-
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, or nausea often worse around menstruation.
-
Pain when urinating or during bowel movements, especially during your period
Our multidisciplinary team provides timely investigations, supportive care and personalised treatment to help manage your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.
