What is an Autism Assessment?

Autism is a natural neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person communicates, relates to others, processes information, and experiences the world.

An autism assessment is a structured, respectful process designed to explore whether a child meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Equally importantly, it aims to build a full understanding of your child’s individual profile, including their strengths, preferences, and support needs.

How do Children's Autism Assessments work?

Step 1: Pre-Assessment Questionnaires (Online)

Before the first appointment, a set of online questionnaires will be sent by email. These provide an opportunity to reflect on experiences in a relaxed, flexible way and help ensure the assessment sessions focus on what is most relevant to the child’s individual profile, strengths, and needs.

Step 2: Initial Parent Consultation (Online 60-90 mins)

A collaborative clinical interview with parents to explore y our child’s development, including:

Communication, behaviour and social experiences

Strengths, interests, and challenges at home and school

Any areas of concern or questions you may have

This session helps us to build a comprehensive understanding of your child. Where appropriate, your adolescent may join part of this session if they feel comfortable, to ensure their perspective is included.

Step 3: Diagnostic Interview with Parents (Online – 2 hours)

A more in-depth diagnostic interview with parents focusing on early development, communication, behaviour patterns, and overall developmental history.

Step 4: Child/Adolescent Assessment (In‑Person – 1 hour 30 minutes)

A structured, activity and conversation-based session designed to understand how your child communicates, interacts, and experiences social situations in a supportive environment.

This session must take place in person to ensure a full and accurate assessment.

Step 5: Feedback & Report Review (Online – 60 minutes)

A dedicated feedback session with parents where your psychologist will:

Explains findings in a clear and sensitive way

Answers any questions you may have

Provide personalised recommendations and next steps.
